A psychoeducational evaluation is a comprehensive assessment that looks at how your child thinks, learns, and processes information. It may include measures of intellectual ability, academic skills, attention, memory, and social-emotional functioning. The goal is to better understand your child's unique strengths and any areas where they may need additional support.
These are some of the tools used individually or in combination to help create a clear, accurate picture of how someone learns and how they are best supported in a way that helps them thrive.
There are many reasons a parent might request an evaluation, difficulty with reading, writing, or math; attention or focus concerns; trouble with social skills; emotional challenges; or simply wanting to better understand how your child learns best.
Most evaluations take between four and five hours in total. Depending on your child's age, stamina, or attention, the evaluation can be completed in one session or spread across two shorter sessions.
Absolutely. I always explain the process to students in age-appropriate language so they feel comfortable and informed every step of the way.
I'll write a detailed report summarizing the findings and meet with you via telehealth to walk through the results. We'll discuss what the findings mean for your child and, if needed, what supports or next steps are recommended.
You can typically expect to receive your report and schedule a feedback session within two weeks of the evaluation being completed. Turnaround time may be slightly longer around holidays or pre-planned time off, which I will always communicate to you in advance.
Not necessarily. An evaluation is simply a tool to better understand your child. Some students do benefit from additional support services, while others may need classroom accommodations, counseling, or parent guidance. Every child is different, and the results will help us determine the most appropriate path forward together.
