Getting Started with Your Assessment

Starting Your Assessment Step-by-Step

When you purchase your portfolio assessment on Step Up, remember we are service providers, and not vendors, so you will place a service order under the name "Starchanger" - Caryol-Lynn

Please send an email to Starchangerstudios@icloud.com, letting us know that you have placed the order. We will send you a link to a Google Drive where you will upload any of the documents that you wish to have reviewed for the assessment.

Please allow 48 for us to review the content.

We will need to schedule a brief phone call or a virtual call to speak with you and your child(ren). It will be brief and we will just ask some very basic questions about what they have learned this year.

What to Expect During Review

During our meeting we will briefly get to know each other (or reconnect) then find out all about your school year. We'll talk to you and your child about your favorite things, successes and challenges. We'll have you show us your portfolio (whether actual paper items, online records or media files) which is a special time of celebration and a chance for your child to "show off" their accomplishments. We'll also help identify and encourage perseverance through the hard things. This is also a time you can ask questions about curriculum, progress, additional support needed, or whatever is on your mind for the current or upcoming year.

Preparing for Portfolio Review

The information below needs to be emailed to us at least 48 hours prior to our meeting time. (We understand families have different ways of keeping records--just provide however you keep track of these things.)

  • Log of educational activities (calendar, planner, list, or however you keep track of activities)
  • Reading materials/curriculum list
  • Minimum of 3 dated work samples from at least 3 subjects from the beginning, middle and end of the year (scan documents and/or send photos)

Anything else you want to share -- pictures, projects, favorite field trips, experiments, whatever!

Next Steps After Review

We will email you the form to return to the district.

Homeschool Portfolios Made Easy

Keep Records & Show Progress

In Florida, homeschool families are required by law to keep a portfolio of records and materials for each homeschooled student. Think of it as a scrapbook of your child’s learning journey, showcasing their progress, creativity, and accomplishments.

Your portfolio should include:

  • A daily log or record of activities – A planner, journal, or digital calendar noting what subjects and lessons were covered.
  • Samples of your child’s work – A variety of examples like math worksheets, writing assignments, science experiments, or art projects.
  • Reading list – Books your child has read, whether for schoolwork or leisure.

What Do Evaluators Want?

Each year, Florida homeschool families are required to submit an annual evaluation. Evaluators aren’t looking for perfection—they simply want to see evidence of educational progress.

Here’s what homeschool evaluators typically look for:

  • A consistent record of learning – Learning logs, lesson notes, grades or proof of learning (progress) over time.
  • Work samples that show growth – Beginning and end-of-year assignments, writing samples, math work, creative projects, photos of field trips,
  • A reading list – Books your child has read independently or with your family.
  • Evidence of progress – This doesn’t mean mastering every subject but showing that your child is moving forward in their education.

Easy Portfolio Tips

Keeping records doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Here are some family-friendly ideas:

  • Use a 3-ring binder – Slip in dated samples of work, notes, and reading lists.
  • Go digital – Create a digital folder with scanned work, photos of projects, and electronic logs.
  • Make it fun – Let your child help choose pieces of work to showcase. This builds pride and involvement.
  • Keep it consistent – Spend just 5 minutes a day jotting notes or filing a sample. Small steps prevent big stress later.
